Yellow-headed Blackbird (Xanthocephalus xanthocephalus)
Yellow-headed blackbirds have a large head with a sharply pointed bill, a long tail, and stout body. Males are black with yellow heads and chests and white patches where their wings bend. Females and immature males are generally gray-brown with a duller yellow head. Look for them in western and prairie wetlands, where they nest in reeds directly over the water. They're just as impressive in winter, when huge flocks seem to roll across farm fields. The male Yellow-headed Blackbird is impressive to see, but not to hear, it may have the worst song of any North American bird, a hoarse, harsh scraping.
